Melissa Couch, PhD

Melissa is a STOTT trained Pilates instructor and a licensed clinical psychologist in independent practice  She first tried pilates in 2005 after a knee injury. Looking for a new form of exercise that could provide a similar physical challenge along with the mindfulness and meditative state of long distance running, she discovered Pilates.

“Pilates transformed me,” Melissa believes. “Like nothing else I had ever tried, Pilates changed my mind as well as my physical body.” Pilates’ focus on quality of movement over quantity was a new mindset that quickly proved itself very effective. She quickly came to believe the Joseph Pilates’ assertion: “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference; in 20 sessions you will see the difference; and in 30 sessions you will have a new body.”

Eager to share this discovery, Melissa completed the comprehensive STOTT pilates training program in 2008. She then taught private and group classes at Pilates Place in Lexington, KY. Combining her experience with Pilates with her training in psychology, Melissa developed a deep interest in the relationship between mental/emotional health and physical health. Teaming with other health professionals, Melissa helped develop and run a pilates program for individuals with eating disorders.

Recently, Melissa, with her three children, moved back home to the Binghamton area. They live  with her boyfriend, Todd, and their golden retriever, Murphy, in Hillcrest.
